Despite the fact that he left Konoha for many years, Jiraiya had maintained an allegiance with his hometown. During Orochimaru's invasion of Konoha, he helped fend off the invading forces in order to protect the village. When Konoha found itself in need of a new Hokage after the Third Hokage's death, Jiraiya volunteered to look for Tsunade so that she could become the Third's successor, after turning down the position himself. His reason for refusing the position was, among other things, that he felt unworthy to take the role, since he had failed to save either of the previous Hokages from dying. After he found Tsunade, and began to suspect that she might be assisting Orochimaru, he made it clear that he would kill her if she betrayed the village. However, once it became clear that Tsunade was still loyal to Konoha, and later accepted the title of Hokage, Jiraiya served as her most trusted adviser, loyal confidante, and personal spy into the dealings of Akatsuki and Konoha's enemies.
Jiraiya was a self-proclaimed super-pervert with no equal, and a frequent voyeur, going so far as to create the Transparent Escape Technique, to allow him to spy on naked women without being caught (doing "research" as he called it, even as a child). He never actually hid his perversion, and even seemed proud of it, as seen when he told the Third Hokage about it when he was still a child. Despite this, Jiraiya disliked being referred to as the Perverted Hermit (エロ仙人, Ero-sennin; English TV "Pervy Sage") by Naruto in front of others.
Jiraiya's perversion had been used against him on occasions, as seen when Naruto got Jiraiya to start training him after a simple display of the Sexy Technique. When two Akatsuki members later tried to distract Jiraiya, they used a hypnotized woman to catch his eye and keep him busy. While their effort initially succeeded, Jiraiya eventually saw through their plot, due solely to the fact that women did not typically express interest in him. His peeping habits had also caused him great injury on one occasion; when caught spying on Tsunade in his younger years, she proceeded to break both of his arms, six of his ribs, and ruptured a number of organs as punishment. As a result of such injuries, Jiraiya now retained a rather healthy fear towards his former teammate, and usually attempted to suppress his perverted ways when in Tsunade's presence.
Some time after leaving Konoha, Jiraiya became the author of a series of adult novels called Icha Icha. The novels were based on his rejections in love, that he retold in a comical way. In a filler episode of the anime, Naruto ghost-wrote one of Jiraiya's Icha Icha novels. The book was found to be very popular. This indicates that either Naruto is capable of writing on the same level as Jiraiya, or that Jiraiya's writing abilities were no better than those of a child. Tsunade seemed to suspect that the latter was true, as she noted that a report he wrote as a child, accompanied by crude crayon illustrations, was poorly written. The popularity of the Icha Icha series seemed to have paid off well, as Jiraiya's checkbook revealed that he was fairly wealthy. Despite his wealth, Jiraiya was not above taking Naruto's money and spending it on sake and women. Jiraiya frequently disappeared when Naruto attempted to make him pay.
Jiraiya had also been known to show off, even during a fight. This showing off typically took the form of traditional kabuki poses, keeping with his hermit theme. He became annoyed if he was interrupted for whatever reason while trying to strike a pose. When the situation called for it, however, Jiraiya could become extremely serious. He could also be quite perceptive, as seen when Naruto tried to walk over the surface of shallow water with Jiraiya watching him; Jiraiya quickly discerned that there was something within Naruto that was disrupting the chakra's circulation through his body.
Despite Jiraiya's flamboyant behavior and prowess as a shinobi, he was a strong believer in peace; his hope being to one day end the hatred that plagued the ninja world. Jiraiya also held a great deal of faith in the next generation of Konoha, and saw them as the answer to this hate.

History:

As a child, Jiraiya and his former teammates, Orochimaru and Tsunade, were students of the Third Hokage. Jiraiya's relation with his team mirrored that of the future Team 7, with Jiraiya being quite similar to Naruto. After leaving the Third's tutelage, he travelled the world, and discovered the residence of the toads, a species he proved to have a natural affinity for. During this time, the Great Toad Sage made a prophecy concerning Jiraiya: that he would someday choose whether one of his students saved or destroyed the world. During the Second Great Shinobi World War, Jiraiya and his former teammates fought Hanzo of Amegakure. Hanzo was so impressed that they could survive in a fight with him that he gave them the title of Konoha's "Legendary Three Ninja" (伝説の三忍, Densetsu no Sannin) in exchange for letting them live.
Once the battle was over, Jiraiya encountered three orphans from Amegakure. While Orochimaru suggested they kill them to spare them the cruelty of the world, Jiraiya decided to look after them for a time, and taught them ninjutsu. During which, he grew close to the three children, and even wrote a book that was inspired by one of them, Nagato. Eventually, however, he left them so that they could pursue their own goals. Although news of their exploits reached him from time to time, he thought them to have died during an undisclosed incident.
Once becoming a Jonin capable of leading a squad, Jiraiya became the teacher of Minato Namikaze, and two other unknown Genin. Years later, when Orochimaru betrayed Konoha and fled the village, Jiraiya pursued him, trying to convince his friend to come back. Orochimaru refused, and attacked Jiraiya. While he tried to find a reason for Orochimaru's defection, he eventually realized that his friend wasn't coming back. Feeling that he was responsible for Orochimaru's escape, Jiraiya left Konoha so he could follow Orochimaru's movements, as well as the organization Orochimaru eventually joined, Akatsuki. In doing so, Jiraiya was unable to fulfill the Third's wishes of taking on the role of Hokage, knowing that tracking down Orochimaru was more important.
A few years before Orochimaru's defection, Jiraiya finished his first book, the Tale of the Utterly Gutsy Shinobi, that had failed as a seller. However, Minato, now the Fourth Hokage, thought the book was excellent. He and Kushina Uzumaki decided to name their son after the main character in his book, Naruto, thus making him Naruto's godfather. Chunin Exam arc
Jiraiya first met Naruto Uzumaki while he was "researching" at the hot springs in Konoha. After Jiraiya knocked out Ebisu for catching him in the act, Naruto demanded that Jiraiya begin training him in Ebisu's place. He refused, until Naruto used his Sexy Technique. When they started training, Jiraiya removed Orochimaru's Five Elements Seal from Naruto's stomach, which allowed him to tap into the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's chakra. To teach him how to take advantage of the Nine-Tails' reserves, Jiraiya taught Naruto how to use the Summoning Technique, but was met with very poor results. To this end, Jiraiya decided to force Naruto to use the Nine-Tails' chakra by pushing him off a cliff. Naruto survived by summoning Gamabunta.
When Orochimaru began his invasion of Konoha, Jiraiya summoned Gamahiro to stop Orochimaru's snakes. He later mourned the Third Hokage's death, but did not attend the funeral.
With the Third's death, the village elders, Homura Mitokado and Koharu Utatane, requested that Jiraiya become the next Hokage, which he quickly turned down. Instead, he volunteered to search for his former teammate, Tsunade, asking only that he be allowed to take Naruto with him.
Just a day after setting off, however, Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki of Akatsuki tried to kidnap Naruto. To do so, they used genjutsu on a woman to distract Jiraiya while they captured Naruto. Jiraiya saw through the trick, and intercepted Itachi and Kisame, who decided they did not want to get involved in a fight with one of the Sannin. When they tried to escape, Jiraiya used Ninja Art: Toad Mouth Trap to trap Itachi and Kisame. Nobody had ever managed to escape that technique before, but Itachi used Amaterasu to burn through the walls and escaped. After that, Naruto and Jiraiya resumed their search for Tsunade, Jiraiya teaching Naruto the Rasengan along the way to keep him occupied.
Orochimaru found Tsunade before Jiraiya did, and asked that she heal his arms. When Jiraiya eventually found her as well, he suspected that they were in contact, and threatened Tsunade not to help Orochimaru. In response, Tsunade drugged his sake when they went to a bar, making it difficult for him to move or use chakra. After he discovered that this was so he wouldn't interfere in her attempt to kill Orochimaru, Jiraiya came to help her. In his drugged state, he struggled to fight Orochimaru, but was able to recover to the point that he could summon Gamabunta to fight Orochimaru's Manda. The healthy Tsunade proved too much for Orochimaru and Manda, defeating the two and causing them to flee. Tsunade then accepted her post as the Fifth Hokage, and they returned to Konoha.
After Naruto failed to stop Sasuke Uchiha from defecting to Orochimaru at the end of Part I, Jiraiya encouraged him to give up on Sasuke, remembering his own experiences with Orochimaru. Naruto refused, prompting Jiraiya to take him away for two and a half years of training, to make him strong enough to bring Sasuke back, and to protect himself from Akatsuki.
After taking Naruto back to Konoha, Jiraiya went off to search for information on Akatsuki. Jiraiya would soon return to inform Kakashi and Yamato about Naruto's four-tails transformation, a form so powerful that it nearly killed Jiraiya before he managed to stop it. It was later revealed that Jiraiya himself released it (not expecting Naruto's loss of control) with a special key passed down from the Fourth Hokage, capable of unlocking Naruto's seal.
In the anime, Jiraiya returned to Konoha to congratulate Naruto on defeating Akatsuki's Kakuzu. In order to keep Naruto from participating in Team 7's new Sasuke-related mission, Jiraiya offered to train him again, and took Naruto to Yugakure. Jiraiya and Naruto also had a discussion over the meaning of 'home': "Wherever someone is thinking of you, that is the place you can return to." In light of Naruto's need to learn some high-ranked, long-distance techniques, Jiraiya introduced Naruto to the concept of synchronized, collaboration jutsu and began by demonstrating a synchronizing jutsu, the Water Release: Water Pistol technique, in collaboration with Gamariki. When Naruto and Gamariki proved unable to synchronize, due to their conflicting personalities, Jiraiya confronted Naruto with the fact that, unless he can work with a summoned toad, a collaboration jutsu would stay out of his reach. Naruto compensated by summoning toads that he did get along with, and, after giving up on trying to work with Gamariki, finally began on working with a synchronized jutsu with Gamatatsu, while Gamakichi guided the process. Jiraiya openly applauded Naruto's progress, and expressed how pleased he was at his dedication to his goals and beliefs. After receiving a message about Akatsuki, Jiraiya was forced to leave Naruto to continue training by himself, though not before convincing Tsunade to let Naruto go on the mission.

This technique uses chakra to temporarily enhance the head's metabolism and manipulate the hair that grows longer as a result of this. There is also chakra flowing through the lengthened hair, making its hardness comparable to that of steel wire. By thickly bundling the hair, its strength is further increased, also increasing its destructive power. Its name may come from the fact that, as seen just before striking Pain, it takes take the shape of a lion's mouth.

The Twin Rasengan simply refers to the ability to form two Rasengan, one in each hand. When Naruto performed this technique he used two different versions of the Rasengan, the Gelel Rasengan, with the aid of Temujin (who helped form it like a shadow clone would normally), and the Demon Fox Rasengan, with the aid of his shadow clone.
Jiraiya does something similar when teaching Naruto how to use the Rasengan; in one hand he forms a regular Rasengan, and in the other he does the balloon exercise.

This jutsu has never actually been seen in the series, but allows the user to spy on others without being noticed. Judging by the name, it may make the user appear transparent or invisible to the opponent. It was invented by Jiraiya in his youth to allow him to spy on girls bathing without the risk of being caught. Interestingly enough, the Third Hokage was also interested in this jutsu, prompting Jiraiya to speculate that his sensei was as perverted as he was.

The user spits oil from their mouth onto a target. Rather than needing to be near a source of oil, it seems that the user keeps a supply of the oil inside their stomach. When needed, the oil can then be brought up into the user's mouth and shot out under pressure. The jutsu has been combined with several other elements in order to create new techniques, including wind, fire, and both.

The Toad Flat Shadow Control Technique allows Jiraiya to merge with the shadow of a subdued foe, similar to the Shadow Imitation Technique of the Nara Clan. Jiraiya can then fully control the victim from within their shadow, allowing him to more easily infiltrate foreign territories. If he has to use his other jutsu, he must emerge from the shadow. Once he fully emerges, the hold over his victim is broken and they regain control of their body.

Jiraiya created this jutsu by adding natural energy to the Great Ball Rasengan. In comparison to the original, the Super Great Ball Rasengan is much larger than Jiraiya's own body and can be used in one hand. Its capabilities are not seen in the manga, but the third databook stated that if it explodes, it can easily hollow out an entire mountain.

This technique summons a Shop Toad (見世蝦蟇, Mise Gama) from Myōbokuzan. This toad has the ability to transform into a large store. The target is then lured inside, for example with the promise of cheap drinks. Once the target has entered the store, the toad changes back into its original small form, trapping the target inside the toad's stomach.

After forming the necessary hand seals, this jutsu encloses the surrounding area with the oesophagus of a great, fire-breathing toad from Myōbokuzan: Rock Lodging (妙木山・岩宿, Myōbokuzan: Iwayado). Jiraiya can then control the esophagus, causing it to expand, contract, or grow in whatever direction he wishes. When first used, Jiraiya claimed that no one had ever escaped from this jutsu. Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki manage to escape when Itachi uses his Amaterasu to burn through the oesophagus.
In a filler arc, Jiraiya uses a variation of this jutsu when he summons an able-bodied toad's stomach to protect himself and Naruto Uzumaki from Kagero's Antlion Ninja Arts: Ephemeral. In the video games, parts of the oesophagus also spew fire, which fits with Jiraiya's description of the animal the toad esophagus originates from.

Before a summon can be performed, a prospective summoner must first sign a contract with a given species.^[3] The contract can come in the form of a scroll or a tattoo. The summoner then signs the contract in their own blood. After this, they need only perform the hand seals, offer an additional donation of blood, and use the same hand they signed the contract with to summon the creature.^[4] The amount of chakra used during the summoning determines how big the summoned creature can be. It should be noted that anyone can summon the animal as long as they have the blood from someone who has made a contract, along with sufficient chakra of their own.^[5]
While most summoners have only been shown capable of summoning one type of creature, Pain has been seen summoning several different animals and even people. Pain does not provide a blood offering when performing a summon.
When an animal is summoned it is transported from its place of residence to the summoner's location. Once summoned, the animal can perform a task or help the user in battle. The summon is not required to help the user, and may be more of a hindrance than an ally. In addition, summons are able to summon their summoner. They may also wear a forehead protector, suggesting a loyalty to only one village.
Summoning can serve as a base for other jutsu, as is the case with Summoning: Food Cart Destroyer Technique and Summoning: Quick Beheading Dance. In these cases, summoning may not be restricted to creatures, Orochimaru also summoning corpses or defenses. Items can also be "summoned" from scrolls. Because the items are not summoned from anywhere, instead only being released from storage, no blood is needed and thus it is not a conventional summoning.

Similar to the Clone Technique, this jutsu creates clones of the user. Unlike the Clone Technique, these clones are actual copies, not illusions. The user's chakra is evenly distributed among every clone, giving each clone an equal fraction of the user's overall power. The clones are capable of performing jutsu on their own and can even bleed, but will usually disperse after one or two solid blows. They can also disperse on their own. The clones will be created in roughly the same condition as the original.
Unlike other clone techniques, they can't be detected by the Byakugan because the clones have the exact same amount of chakra and aren't made from any other substance, making them indistinguishable from the actual person. In the anime, Sasuke Uchiha claims that the Sharingan can distinguish clones from the original, however various events throughout the series seem to indicate that this is not the case, implying that the Sharingan was merely used to keep track of the original's movements.

Sage Mode is the result of using natural energy along with a ninja's normal chakra in perfect balance to explosively increase a ninja's abilities.

Senjutsu (仙術, Sage Techniques) refers to a specialized field of jutsu that allows the user to sense and then gather the natural energy around a person. Senjutsu practitioners can then learn to draw the energy of nature inside of them, blend it with their own chakra, (created from spiritual and physical energy within the shinobi) as well as energy from nature, this results in the creation of "senjutsu chakra" (仙術チャクラ, senjutsu chakura).
This new chakra enables the user to enter a powered state called Sage Mode, which can then drastically increase the strength of all ninjutsu, genjutsu, and taijutsu. A person who is able to use senjutsu is called a sage (仙人, sennin). It would seem that it stems from the toads of Myōbokuzan, as only Shima, Fukasaku, Jiraiya and Naruto can use it. Gamakichi also seems to be familiar with it.
Advantages

• The user's physical strength, speed, and durability drastically increases.
  
• The user's ninjutsu, genjutsu, and taijutsu become more powerful.
  
• The user can have the natural energy surrounding them become an extension of their body, increasing the reach of their attacks.

Weaknesses

• Because the user is moving, the Sage chakra cannot be replenished, which means the user can't stay in this mode for extended periods of time.
  
• In order to gather enough natural energy to initiate the transformation into Sage Mode, the user must remain perfectly still. Because of that, the user can be an easy target for an opponent.
  
• As soon as Sage Mode ends the user is left in an exhausted state, and can easily be attacked.
  

Jiraiya was not able to properly balance his own chakra with natural energy, resulting in him using an imperfect form of Sage Mode. So, whenever Jiraiya was using Sage Mode, he drew additional lines on his cheeks.^[2] Jiraiya would summon the two Toad Elders, Shima and Fukasaku to assist him in using Sage Mode. The Toad Elders fused to Jiraiya's shoulders with Sage Art: Amphibian Technique, gathering natural energy from their stationary positions for Jiraiya's use.
As a result of the toad-fusion (and the imperfect nature of his transformation), Jiraiya took a number of toad-like traits when using Sage Mode. His appearance was altered (he has a bigger nose, a goatee, and toad-like eyes). Further transformational attributes includes him taking on a toad-like stature, his hands and feet also became that of a toad and the lines on his face become much thicker, taking over each side of his face. Because of these traits, Jiraiya didn't like to use Sage Mode as it "displeases the ladies".

Fire Release: Toad Oil Flame Bullet is a two-way collaboration jutsu. Gamabunta will use Toad Oil Bullet to shoot a jet of oil from his mouth. His summoner then ignites the oil. Jiraiya uses Fire Release: Flame Bullet for this purpose, while Naruto, knowing no Fire Release ninjutsu and needing an ignition source, substituted an exploding tag instead. The oil, acting as an accelerant, provides more fuel for the fire in a effect like a flamethrower, and creating an conflagration of far greater power and magnitude then the original fire ninjutsu used on its own could have.

The Fire Release: Flame Bullet technique resembles the Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique; but it is more of a stream than a ball. The technique is executed by user gathering oil in their mouth, spits it out, and ignites it, sending a streaming fireball to the enemy. Similar to the Fire Release: Ash Pile Burning technique, this jutsu also produces a combustible material prior to ignition.
Apart from being used on its own, the Fire Release: Flame Bullet technique can also be combined with the Toad Oil Bullet technique to become the two-way collaboration jutsu, the Fire Release: Toad Oil Flame Bullet technique. It can also be combined with the two-way collaboration jutsu, the Wind Release: Toad Oil Bullet technique, to become a three-way collaboration jutsu, the Wind Release: Toad Oil Flame Bullet technique.
There is a bigger version, augmented with Senjutsu chakra, called Fire Release: Big Flame Bullet.

This technique is a bigger version of the Fire Release: Flame Bullet. Just like with the normal Flame Bullet, Jiraiya spits out a fireball of flaming oil. However, because the fireball is augmented with Senjutsu chakra, it is many times bigger than the normal Flame Bullet.

This is the jutsu that Jiraiya uses to send a message with, after his throat is caved in during the battle with Pain. The user concentrates chakra into their finger and using the heat from that can apply writing on whatever they want. This allows them to write on the skin of animals, iron plates, or a wide range of things however when doing so requires them to be very delicate with their chakra control.

This special seal tag was developed by Jiraiya so it can be used to suppress the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's influence over Naruto. By applying the seal to Naruto's forehead the Nine-Tails' chakra and personality recede. Naruto is left fatigued afterwards.

This technique summons a Gourd Toad (瓢箪蝦蟇, Hyōtan Gama), a small, gourd-shaped toad, from Myōbokuzan. The victim is then dragged into the toad's stomach, which is isolated from the outside world by a barrier. Inside the toad's stomach is a lake of strong acid that will dissolve anything that falls into it.

This barrier allows Jiraiya to detect the movements and position of any enemy that steps within it. Used against Pain in an attempt to detect him after he had hidden inside a chameleon summoning, which had blended into its surroundings.

Jiraiya, in Sage Mode, bends down and his hair strands turn into needles and flurry at the opponent. According to himself, this is the fastest attack in his arsenal, and covers a wide range.

The Sage Art: Goemon jutsu is a three-way synchronized combination (or collaboration) jutsu between Jiraiya with Shima and Fukasaku. It is similar to the anime-only Wind Release: Toad Oil Flame Bullet, a three-way 'wind/fire/oil' technique used between Naruto Uzumaki, Gamakichi and Gamatatsu.
The Sage Art: Goemon technique is a Sage level combination attack, used to ensure the targe'ts destruction, and is used on Shima's signal once the opponent has been driven into a corner: First, Jiraiya creates a large volume of oil, followed by Fukasaku performing a Wind Release technique and Shima performing a large Fire Release technique.
Since Wind Chakra naturally feeds into Fire Chakra, Fukasaku's wind jutsu increases the intensity of Shima's fire jutsu, increasing the flames destructive potential. Fukasaku's wind jutsu also provides the oil from Jiraiya's jutsu with more pressure to deliver more force, causing the area to be be filled with burning oil. The wind-enhanced oil-blast, followed by the wind-enhanced flames, creates an inferno of such magnitude that, within an instant, the target and the surrounding area will be reduced to cinders.


The Rasengan (螺旋丸; Literally meaning "Spiraling Sphere") is a powerful A-Rank technique invented by the Forth Hokage, Minato Namikaze. After three years of development, he never saw it completed, having never acheived the desired results before he died.
Minato's idea for the Rasengan was to take the Shape Transformation of his chakra to the "highest possible point" and then combine it with his chakra's nature affinity, creating a jutsu that didn't need the aid of time-consuming Hand Seals to control. He died before he could accomplish this, but, on shape manipulation alone, the Rasengan is still a very useful, powerful, and difficult jutsu to learn.
Usage

In Part I, Jiraiya taught Naruto how to use the Rasengan, breaking the learning process into three steps:

• The first step was learning how to burst a water balloon by spinning the water inside in multiple directions at once using only the user's chakra, which emphasizes rotation.
  
• The second step was for the user to burst a rubber ball, and since rubber is thicker and air is completely different from water, it forces the user to use denser chakra to break it. This step emphasizes power.
  
• The last and final step was to combine both step one and two by spinning chakra inside a balloon without moving the balloon itself, emphasizing stability of the sphere shape.
  

Although most users learn to form the Rasengan with one hand, Naruto and Konohamaru use one or more shadow clones to help in its creation. By having the hands of the shadow clones act as shells, Naruto and Konohamaru can use the complete technique without having to dedicate extra time to mastering their chakra control.
Naruto has been seen using a one-handed Rasengan in a one-tailed transformation.

The Rasengan doesn't require any hand seals to use, relying only on the chakra control of the user. Once it's complete it becomes self-sustaining, which does not give Rasengan a definite limit like its counterpart, the Chidori. The compacted nature and moving speed of the chakra allows the Rasengan to grind into whatever it comes in contact with, inflicting major damage. This also tends to launch the target backward once hit. In an anime filler arc, Naruto was able to perform this jutsu as a mid-range projectile technique by somehow throwing it into a wall.
The Rasengan was designed to use the caster's elemental affinities. Minato was unable to add his affinities to his Rasengan before he died. Kakashi tried to add his lightning element to the Rasengan, but was unable to and explains that he uses the Chidori and Lightning Blade instead, which requires a certain point of shape manipulation and nature manipulation itself. Naruto was the first to add his wind affinity to his Rasengan and even advanced it to the point that he was able to create the Wind Release: Rasenshuriken.

While in training, Naruto improved the Rasengan with the Great Ball Rasengan, after Jiraiya pointed out during their time away from Konohagakure that it would be easier to hit an opponent with a larger Rasengan. Later, Naruto mixed his Wind natured chakra to start developing the Wind Release: Rasengan as it was originally intended. Naruto took the Rasengan even further than his father by creating the Wind Release: Rasenshuriken, a variant of the Wind Release: Rasengan. However, this new technique also damaged the user's arm and chakra circulatory system, making it a double-edged sword. Even so, Naruto overcame this obstacle as shown during his fight with Pain when, in Sage Mode, he threw the Rasenshuriken, preventing damage done to his own body.
Naruto can also wield a Rasengan in both of his hands while in Sage Mode. Sage Art: Great Ball Rasengan uses two Great Ball Rasengan, while Sage Technique: Rasenrengan uses two regular Rasengan. Jiraiya is suggested to be capable of doing something similar; when teaching Naruto the Rasengan, he does the balloon exercise in both of his hands.

With this jutsu, Jiraiya's hair will grow in length to surround and protect his body. In this form, it also becomes rigid and spiked, in a manner similar to a hedgehog's or porcupine's quills, forming a layer of protection from direct strikes, and blows from certain types of weapons such as arrows. Due to Jiraiya being drugged, the jutsu was not demonstrated to its full potential the first time it was used. </LI>

The user summons a special Diving Toad (潜り蝦蟇, Moguri Gama) from Myōbokuzan and hides inside its stomach.
The frog is able to dive up to a hundred meters in fresh water, making it especially useful for infiltrating enemy camps that are surrounded by a river or a lake. The stomach of the frog also has a special barrier that obstructs chakra, protecting the user from detection-type ninjutsu.

By touching the forehead of his target, Jiraiya is able to turn them into a frog. This technique does not actually turn a target into a toad, but captures the target inside the toad. The technique is called Frog Conversion Technique to scare and confuse the opponent's allies.

This jutsu is used to remove seals of up to equal power, like the Five Elements Seal.
The five elements in the name of this jutsu don't refer to the elemental chakra used in many other jutsu (earth (土, tsuchi), water (水, mizu), fire (火, hi), wind (風, kaze), and lightning (雷, kaminari)). Instead, they refer to the Chinese five elements: metal (金, Chinese: jīn), wood (木, Chinese: mù), water (水, Chinese: shuǐ), fire (火, Chinese: huǒ), and earth (土, Chinese: tǔ), suggesting the elements are merely symbolic.

This jutsu allows the user to seal a nearby fire into a scroll. The user writes the seal on a scroll and then performs the required hand seals. This causes a vapor to appear from the scroll, enveloping the fire and sealing it on the scroll as the kanji for seal (封). Jiraiya used this jutsu to seal away the left over black fire from Itachi Uchiha's Amaterasu technique.
